Annie: “A lot has changed since I started my career 22 years ago as a national TV news producer. Starting out as a Production Assistant at MSNBC with Dan Abrams, I couldn’t have imagined a more exciting or perfect role for me straight out of college. Being part of a team that produced a live, hour-long show five days a week was fast-paced, busy and fun. I loved being part of a big team and working down to the wire to make sure the show got off smoothly. 

Spending nearly a decade in person, within studios, at the onset of my career, is what ultimately propelled me into starting Pace PR. It was the interactions with the guests I booked and connected with in real life, especially in the greenrooms, that laid the foundation for the agency.”

Considering the evolving media landscape, how have you seen the perception of TV news change over the years, especially in comparison to other emerging platforms? 

Annie: “In the past, mentioning my work in television to almost anyone elicited awe and a ton of questions. It carried a sense of gravitas and allure as being an exciting and unconventional career path.Talking about TV news in 2025 likely garners a different reaction. Try mentioning “cable news” to Gen-Z – if it’s not streaming or on social media, there’s a good chance they couldn’t mention the three big national morning shows, or one anchor on CNN or Fox. 

Many companies and brands are putting resources into content, paid opportunities and various marketing tactics outside of traditional PR, TV bookings and broadcast media placements. Everyone’s benefitted from having more options to consider in your total comms plan. But if you overlook TV news, TV bookings and traditional earned media, you’re likely missing out on what could be a critical component to growing your brand awareness, increasing your industry stature and strengthening your thought leadership.”

Would you say that TV bookings continue to hold significant value in 2025? 

Annie: “Absolutely. I know from experience the power TV holds. 

Several years ago, we placed a client of ours, a non-profit CEO, on Bloomberg Television. It was a great segment, lasting several minutes (an eternity in cable news!), that led to a phone call into their office, with a donor looking to make a contribution in the millions. That is a true story! 

We’ve had countless clients secure partnerships directly from appearing on television. Many of them have told me about the interesting folks they themselves have met in the greenroom. 

But TV clips serve another purpose, too. 

For those in the service industry, video content is a way to have potential clients or customers get to know you (or feel like they know you), by watching you in action. How thoughtfully you answer a question from a reporter shows off your personality. 

For our clients who are medical physicians, we’ve heard that these videos play a big part in having a patient make an appointment with them. 

The same thing goes for our legal clients. Hiring an attorney can be quite personal in most instances. Many feel more comfortable getting to know their potential legal counsel by watching them in a few videos, rather than hiring them blindly.

For our CEOs, there really is no better media outlet to highlight success than CNBC (maybe the WSJ ranks closely!). When our VC, PE and investment clients appear on CNBC, it strengthens their reputation in a crowded landscape. 

The power to utilize the clip of the TV interview afterwards, on social media, marketing communications and investment decks have played a role in client’s exits, acquisitions and mergers.

One of the major components of Unilever’s brand strategy under Schumacher’s leadership has been a comprehensive portfolio review, completed in early 2024 alongside the company’s new leadership team. This review was pivotal in establishing what would be retained, what would be spun off, and which brands had the best potential for growth.

The decision to divest certain parts of the business, such as Dollar Shave Club and other non-core brands, was not made lightly. Schumacher explained that the overarching focus is on fostering scalable brands—brands that can grow through multi-channel innovation and that benefit from global reach. “For instance, Dove, which is our biggest brand at close to 7 billion euros, has been growing in double digits this year,” he shared. “Bigger brands allow us to do bigger things—more impactful marketing, better use of R&D, and quicker, more robust innovation.”

Scaling Through Focused Investments

Unilever’s new approach is rooted in targeted investment. Instead of spreading resources thin across numerous brands, the company aims to concentrate investment in fewer but higher-impact areas. The food division is a prime example of this shift. Unilever is focusing on condiments and cooking aids—led by two powerhouse brands, Hellmann’s and Knorr. “The idea is to move from a scattered portfolio to one that’s more coherent, with fewer brands that have a larger footprint,” Schumacher explained. “Condiments and cooking aids are categories where we see real opportunities to grow globally.”

Knorr, a 5 billion euro brand, and Hellmann’s, which holds a leading position in condiments, represent Unilever’s attempt to organize its portfolio along two high-growth pillars: scalability and global relevance. By doing so, Schumacher believes Unilever can better target resources, achieve market dominance in key verticals, and ensure that investments lead to long-term, sustainable growth.

Premiumization and Global Reach

Premiumization is another vital facet of Schumacher’s brand realignment strategy. As global consumer tastes evolve, there is growing demand for premium products—particularly in the health, beauty, and wellness categories. Unilever’s Prestige Beauty division has seen acquisitions of brands like Dermalogica and Hourglass in recent years, and Schumacher aims to internationalize these acquisitions. “We have acquired digitally native brands in the U.S., and now we’re scaling them internationally, bringing them to Europe, China, and India,” he said.

In this reshaped portfolio, premiumization isn’t just about acquiring high-value brands but ensuring these products are positioned appropriately for growth across multiple geographies. The expansion into markets like China and India signifies a commitment to tapping into regions with burgeoning middle classes where premium consumption is rising.

Divestments: Streamlining to Scale

To facilitate this more concentrated and growth-centric approach, Schumacher has led Unilever through a series of divestitures designed to sharpen its focus. Dollar Shave Club, water and air purification brands, and a handful of regional, smaller brands were all divested under Schumacher’s tenure. The goal was not merely to shed underperforming units but to make sure that Unilever’s portfolio was capable of benefiting from the company’s strengths—its international footprint, R&D prowess, and the ability to innovate at scale.

“We are not in a fire sale,” Schumacher emphasized, indicating a deliberate and considered approach to portfolio management. “We’re looking to evolve into those higher growth areas with scalable brands—it’s not about offloading assets at any cost but making strategic decisions about where Unilever can create value and where others might be better owners.”

Navigating Regional Market Dynamics

As part of his strategic transformation, Schumacher has also considered regional market dynamics to maximize brand potential. India stands out as a significant growth market where Unilever has a strong footprint, participating in 85% of households. Schumacher highlighted that mid-term opportunities in India—especially in hair care and hygiene—are vast due to rising GDP and increased disposable income. “India is arguably our number one opportunity globally,” Schumacher stated. “We are four to five times bigger than our closest competitor in hair care and play across all price tiers.”

While success in India offers opportunities, markets like Indonesia have proven more challenging. Schumacher openly admitted that Unilever was caught off guard by local competitors offering lower-priced alternatives and that there was a need for a “significant reset” to regain traction. This honesty reflects the pragmatism underpinning Schumacher’s strategy—acknowledging areas for improvement while doubling down on markets where Unilever is positioned for success.

Towards a More Simplified and Agile Unilever

At the core of Unilever’s shifting brand strategy is an aspiration for simplicity and agility. With the demerger of its ice cream business on the horizon, the company is transitioning into a leaner, more focused organization. Schumacher’s goal is to create a “lighter Unilever” that moves away from legacy structures and embraces flexibility, both in its operational footprint and its brand portfolio.

Schumacher’s belief is that Unilever can harness its core strengths—brand loyalty, scale, and R&D—to unlock new growth, but only by focusing where it truly matters. “It’s about fueling the right ideas, focusing on fewer but bigger brands, and getting them to scale globally,” he said.

This emphasis on operational simplicity also extends to organizational restructuring. In March 2024, Unilever announced a major restructuring program that would cut approximately 7,500 roles. The intention, according to Schumacher, is to ensure that the organization is aligned with a post-ice cream business model, while enhancing efficiency and agility to respond to market dynamics more effectively.

Looking Ahead: A Clear Vision

The strategy that Schumacher has laid out is about more than just cost-cutting or divestitures. It is about transforming Unilever into a company that is leaner, more focused, and more capable of responding to consumer needs on a global scale. Microsoft, for example, has taken significant steps to create privacy-focused advertising solutions. “Ad Selection API is designed to protect personally identifiable information at all times,” Farrow explained. The API manages this data locally on a browser, such as Microsoft Edge, ensuring that personal information doesn’t leave the user’s environment. This approach allows advertisers to target relevant audiences effectively without compromising user privacy. “The central aim of the advertising industry is how we can continue to personalize and reach the audiences that we want, in a way that maintains trust throughout the entire user journey,” said Farrow.

The Ad Selection API exemplifies the industry’s move toward technologies that enhance privacy while still allowing brands to deliver targeted ads. “This is a way to ensure or guarantee even that personal data or personal information of the consumer is protected at all times,” Farrow pointed out. By managing user information within the browser, the technology reassures consumers that their data is secure while still enabling brands to connect with relevant audiences.

Navigating a Complicated Regulatory Environment

One of the major challenges brands face today is adapting to a constantly evolving regulatory environment. “The privacy landscape is complicated and is evolving all the time,” Farrow said. He referred to several global regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and the Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as multiple state-level laws in the United States. Brands must be agile and adaptable, staying compliant with these regulations while delivering effective personalization.

“At a minimum, you need to make sure that you’re adhering to local laws globally,” Farrow advised. He highlighted the importance of transparency with consumers about how their data is used and obtaining their explicit consent. “That means having things like consent banners and making sure that the partners you’re working with know what the user has chosen in terms of their consent or privacy choices.” Microsoft, for example, has rolled out consent mode in Europe, collaborating with tools like Cookiebot to help brands easily communicate their data practices to users.

Farrow also mentioned the growing significance of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) in advertising. “Ad Selection API is built on privacy-enhancing technologies,” he said. These technologies, including clean rooms, are helping brands deliver personalized ads without compromising privacy. “Ultimately, they will help brands reach consumers in a way that maintains user trust,” Farrow added, underscoring the role of PETs as the foundation for privacy-conscious advertising.

AI and the Future of Personalization

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the way brands personalize their marketing, from audience targeting to creative content. “AI is going to completely reshape personalization from start to finish,” Farrow predicted. Microsoft is actively embedding its AI tool, Copilot, across its platforms, which Farrow believes will bring a new level of personalization to advertising. “Copilot, built on large language models (LLMs), will revolutionize not just the way brands connect with their consumers and optimize algorithms, but also the way brands get recommendations for how they should reach their consumers.”

Farrow explained that AI will also simplify the notoriously complex world of ad tech by offering practical, real-time recommendations to marketers. “Brands will have that kind of personal buddy-companion-like information or advice as they build their campaigns, which should help the whole process,” Farrow said. By simplifying workflows, AI tools like Copilot will make it easier for brands to navigate the personalization-privacy balance and achieve their marketing goals.

AI will enable brands to offer more nuanced personalization without crossing privacy boundaries. By understanding individual user preferences and adjusting in real-time, AI can provide tailored experiences without relying on invasive data collection methods. “With the incorporation of these new tools, simplifying the workflow and making sure brands reach their consumers will be much, much easier in the future,” Farrow added.

Building Trust with Consumers

Trust is the foundation of effective personalization. As brands leverage sophisticated technologies like AI and PETs, they must ensure that privacy remains a core component of their strategy. “Brands need to be aware of all the challenges around the privacy landscape,” Farrow emphasized. Beyond regulatory compliance, brands must be transparent about their data practices and demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding user information.

“Consumers need to be confident that their data is not being misused, and that’s why trust is so critical,” Farrow said. “If brands can be transparent, use privacy-enhancing technologies, and communicate clearly with consumers, they can create personalized experiences that are not only effective but also respectful of individual privacy.” As Farrow concluded, “The future of advertising will be built on trust, transparency, and the intelligent use of technology.”

Michael Ralph, co-founder of MEGA SEO, shares a similar sentiment: “More traffic without more sales just costs more in a number of ways. It also diverts budget.” By optimizing the website for conversions, businesses can ensure that every visitor has a better chance of becoming a paying customer, thereby maximizing the return on SEO investments.

One of the major issues with relying purely on SEO is the emphasis on vanity metrics. LinkedIn cites feedback stating that thought-leadership content is considered more trustworthy than a company’s marketing materials. At the same time, outside brand advocates can be a powerful voice for a company, making the ability to promote their content a desirable option.

LinkedIn describes how the new feature will work:

A brand will login to Campaign Manager to set up their Thought Leader Ad. Once logged in, they will have the option to search for the person (by name) – 1st or 2nd degree connection – or post (by URL) the content that they want to sponsor. The search will yield a list of posts from that member that the brand can sponsor. To help prevent content from being misused or promoted without consent, when a company selects a post to sponsor, the creator will receive a notification asking them to “approve” or “deny” the request. 

The company says the new feature will be available globally by the end of March 2024.

“We took some inspiration from that scene in Ratatouille,” Anderson reveals. “He eats this piece of food that sends this rush of memory. We love that notion that a single bite can be that visceral and emotional.”

Thus, the concept of “This is your brain on food” was born—a tagline that evokes the old anti-drug PSA language with a culinary twist.

“It’s really just like a pretty ridiculous experience of making it and wonderfully ridiculous ads, too,” Butt adds.

But translating these ideas into visuals was no small feat. The team tapped into animation to create a trippy, imaginative world where different foods evoke different emotions. From CG to 2D to claymation, each animation style was carefully chosen to match the experience of the food.

“We were very purposeful around selecting animation styles that felt right for the experience of that particular food,” explains Kim. “The challenge was to make sure that there was still a coherence through them all.”

And the result? A series of ads that capture the essence of food and seamlessly integrate merchants into the brand campaign, driving interest and engagement.

“It really functioned well as co-marketing for us and the merchants,” says Anderson. As a result, a lot of restaurants have now been coming to us asking to be included in our brand campaign.”
